Knight & Carver, HF Interiors honored by Showboats Intl. 
NATIONAL CITY, CALIFORNIA – Knight & Carver YachtCenter has been awarded “Best Refit/Reconfiguration 2009” by Showboats International as part of the luxury yacht magazine’s annual salute to world-wide excellence in megayacht repair. Knight & Carver’s refit of M/Y Helios, a 194 ft (59.1 meters) Oceanco, was completed in 2008. The extensive six-month refit was performed in 2008 at Knight & Carver’s full-service marine repair facility in National City, CA, located just south of San Diego.  The project was conducted in close cooperation with HF Interiors, a Swedish-based interior fabrication firm that specializes in cruise ship projects. Helios marked HF Interior’s most extensive megayacht refit. The yacht’s former traditional European styling was replaced by a far more glamorous, contemporary look more befitting the owners’ lifestyle. Think St. Tropez meets South Beach. As Captain Tommy Gurr put it: “It’s a floating beach house, totally chic, edgy and contemporary.” As many as 100 full-time workers were assigned to the interior refit. The daily workforce included carpenters, electricians, steelworkers, upholsterers, floor carpenters, mechanics and engineers, among other related trades. Besides the major interior overhaul of the saloon/cinema, master stateroom and all six guest staterooms, Helios’ transformation also included a full remodel of its spacious sundeck, lazarette and galley. Other major upgrades were made to the mechanical system. Not to be overlooked, the refit also included full exterior paintwork. The award’s official category is “Best Refit/Reconfiguration,” defined as “excellence in re-customization of a motor or sailing yacht to fit the needs of an existing or new owner.” A total of 12 megayacht refits, performed by many of the world’s best luxury shipyards, were nominated for the Showboats award.  Launched in 2001, Helios now calls the West Coast its cruising base.
